the Facility at Knollwood Farm

Knollwood Farm is located in beautiful West Michigan, about halfway between Detroit and Chicago along Interstate 94.  The farm is set on twenty acres of rolling hills, fields, and hardwood/pine forests,Back of Barn just north of the city of Battle Creek.

We have taken care to create both a relaxing and a professional environment by carefully designing and maintaining this beautiful facility. It was set up after extensive research of equine behavior and psychology to ensure an optimum environment for training, breeding and developing world class competition horses.

The attractive 17-stall Morton barn sits atop a hill overlooking the paddocks behind.  The barn was carefully built and planned, and has several special features, including a heated tack room, rubber matting in each stall, and heated automatic waterers in each stall, eliminating worry over frozen water buckets in the wintertime.  The stalls are 12' x 12' or 12' x 18' in size, constructed of varnished pine.  The stalls also feature bars on the upper half, promoting air flow and brightness, and better psychological health for the horses.

Main Barn

A horse's respiratory system is not only extremely important for working and training, but is also one of their most delicate components.  To ensure optimum respiratory health, every stall has a window that opens to allow air flow, as well as a full size grate on the front.  The barn features a built-in ceiling ventilation system that pulls hot air out of the barn, and cool air in from the doorways.  Having so much air flow keeps dust, moisture, and mold to a minimum, creating a healthier environment overall.

Because of its superior construction and planning, in cold weather the barn stays very warm.  It consistentlyIndoor Arena maintains a temperature at least 20 degrees above the temperature outside.  We do not heat the barn except in extreme conditions, because heated barns have been shown to promote illness and bacterial infections in horses.

The barn also includes a lit wash bay with rubber matting to prevent slippage and injuries, hot and cold water, and radiant heaters.  The barn is very bright, with windows in each end-sliding door, and skylights throughout the barn to let in as much light as possible.

To protect your valuable assets, there is a full security system that covers the entire barn to prevent both tack and horse theft.  It is turned on every evening and runs until the morning, ensuring that either the security system is on, or there is someone present at the barn at all times.

In front of the barn lies the Olympic-sized outdoor dressage arena.  It features sand footing and a picturesque and quiet setting in which to train and practice.  Both arenas are groomed several times a week to make sure the footing is always optimal.  The indoor arena is also designed with the horse and rider in mind.  It measures an inside length of 140' and a width of 66'.  With a solid base as well as sand & rubber top footing, it is just the right depth to be neither too hard nor too deep.  The arena is brightly lit, and features two walls of large mirrors.  It also has a shingled roof to virtually eliminate noise caused by weather, such as heavy rain and winds.

Back PaddocksOn those days that are just too gorgeous to spend in an arena, we offer 10 acres of scenic riding trails that wind through woods and fields.  They are carefully maintained and bedded with old shavings to make sure the horses do not trip or injure themselves on rocks, sticks, and other hazards of the trail.  In the winter months, boarders may use the trails for many fun winter-wonderland activities, including riding, hiking, or cross-country skiing.

The paddocks and pastures have been completely redone over this 2006/2007 winter with super-safe flexible horse mesh and top boards, measuring over 50" tall. They have also been reconfigured to maximize space, as well as keep muddy and icy conditions to a minimum. Water hydrants are placed in close proximity all the way back to minimize the hassle of hauling hoses.

It is truly a world class facility, with the potential for expansion, and ideal for any training, breeding or show organization.
